Kauffmann studied medicine at Owens College Manchester and St Mary's Hospital London. He held junior positions in London before being appointed house physician at MRI. In 1891 Kauffmann was promoted to resident medical officer at MRI. In 1892 Kauffmann began his career in Birmingham where he would become professor of medicine at Birmingham University and consultant physician at a number of Birmingham hospitals. Kauffmann died on 15 May 1934 aged 71.
