Mumford studied medicine at Owens College Manchester and took the MB ChB of Victoria University in 1887, as well as the conjoint diploma. In 1889 he received his MD from London University. He was a general practitioner in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester, and also served as honorary physician to the Crippled Children's Help Society and the Greengate Hospital and Open Air School. In 1908 he was appointed assistant physician at Manchester Northern Hospital, where he remained until retirement in 1938. He was president of the MMS in 1926. He was also medical officer to Manchester Grammar School, where he undertook research on mental and physical development of adolescents for his book, Healthy Growth (Oxford 1927).
