Lord Derby writes giving his opinion that [Gladstone] their "great and venerable chief has smashed the [Liberal] party". He writes concerning the divisions among the Liberal Party and that if Gladstone asks the House of Commons to "turn out the present government and bring him in, he can do it only with Irish support". He writes that they cannot join a Parliament pledged to deal with the Irish Home Rule question without knowing fully what they are being asked to agree to. He writes that very much depends on SCC. His abstention will make the adoption of a dangerous policy impossible, his acquiesence would make resistance useless. Sent from: Knowsley, Prescot. Letter is marked "private".
