Mr Barnes writes concerning securing a Unionist candidate for the seat of Chesterfield. He writes advising SCC that if a member of the family were to contest the seat, then they would secure the support of "both sections" of the Unionist party thereby having a good chance of defeating the "sitting Gladstonian member" who is far from popular. He further writes that a member of SCC's family would not be "exposed to the opposition of the mining vote" as Mr Barnes has been. He also writes putting a case forward for Mr Victor Cavendish to contest the Chesterfield seat. He further writes that should a member of the family not come forward to contest the seat, then he does not believe there is any other candidate available who would be capable of winning. He finally writes of the possibility of Mr A.H. Bryan standing. Sent from: Ashgate Lodge, Chesterfield.
