SCC writes to his cousin that he has been in St Petersburg for a week and he is most struck by the St Isaac Church and describes it's "magnificence". He reports that they have not seen any of Russian Society yet as they have gone to Moscow already. He informs his cousin that he went to a ball but comments that there was a deficiency of women and "those who were there were very ugly". He writes that on Thursday they were presented to Alexander II of Russia who was very "gracious" and told him to tell his cousin "mille horses". Afterwards, they had an excellent dinner at the Palais Anglais. He reports that they will go to Moscow on Tuesday. Sent from St. Petersburg, date stamped 16 August.
