Granville writes to SCC regarding the possible resignation of SCC and John Spencer, 5th Earl Spencer. He writes that William Ewart Gladstone has informed him that the Lord Lieutenancy of Ireland is vacant which suggests that Spencer has now resigned. Granville reports that he had hoped Spencer would stay. He writes that he spoke to [Bryce] who advises that Gladstone may wish for SCC to stay in Ireland. He writes that Gladstone may be using another candidate but really wants SCC to stay and advises that Gladstone thinks very highly of SCC. Sent from: Balmoral Castle, date stamped, 22 Sept.
