Letter from Joseph Chamberlain to Spencer Compton Cavendish, 8th Duke of Devonshire

This material is held atThe Devonshire Collection Archives, Chatsworth

Scope and Content

Mr Chamberlain writes concerning the Preferential Tariff Reform controversy. He writes that he gave up "The Spectator" two or three years ago as it was "dull and foolish" so has not seen any of its recent articles. He also writes that his original idea was to give preference to the colonies as a revenue tax and for this taxation to be spent on social reforms which "are certain to come in the future". He writes of his views on the taxing of corn, diary produce, all meat, tea and sugar. He also writes of the impact such taxations would have on the ordinary working man. He further writes on the contents of an "interesting memorandum" he has received from Mr Nordenfelt in relation to a protective system adopted in Sweden in 1888. Sent from: Highbury, Moor Green, Birmingham. Letter is marked "Dictated".
