Letter from Francis Edmund Currey to Spencer Compton Cavendish, Marquess of Hartington

This material is held atThe Devonshire Collection Archives, Chatsworth

Scope and Content

Currey writes to SCC regarding his views on the Irish Land Bill. He writes that the new Bill is overly complicated and he disagrees that tenants should receive a large sum of money due to sales of interest as it will raise the rents in the future. He writes that he believes the Land League will encourage many of their tenants to go to court to see what they could profit from rather than going to court due to an established dispute with the landlord. He reports that the Bill makes it more difficult for landlords to evict tenants. Sent from: Lismore Castle, Lismore, date stamped, 26 April.
