He writes that he hopes to make good progress but communication with Gordon has been poor with no certainty that any messages are reaching him. He reports that the Mahdi leader has a diminished prestige but his followers still surround Khartoum. He writes that he is attempting to negotiate through Hussein Pasha Khalifa through his son. He reports that [Vizatelli] whose real name may be Vaughan is being held prisoner and is an acquaintaince of SCC's from America.
