Letter from Spencer Compton Cavendish, Marquess of Hartington to William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire

This material is held atThe Devonshire Collection Archives, Chatsworth

Scope and Content

SCC writes to his father that he is still in Wales and met Richard Green-Price to canvass for the Radnor seat. He writes that Price has not yet resigned his seat and there does not seem to be a strong opposition even though there were concerns about an outsider standing in the constituency. He reports that George Henry Phillips is the oppositions's man and Price is a fool to think that Philips does not stand a chance. However, he writes that it is difficult to find out the true situation as he does not know anyone and there has not been a contest for some years. He informs his father he needs to know more about the opportunity for a seat in Bristol before confirming anything about it. Sent from: Norton Manor, Presteign, date stamped 26 Jan.
