SCC writes thanking Gladstone for his previous correspondence. He confirms that he will show the letters to Northbrook and Harcourt in strict confidence and will forward them on to Granville as requested. He writes that his initial impressions are that if Home Rule is granted to Ireland on the grounds stated by Jenkinson, then it is "useless to think of stopping short of separation". He writes that it is not Parnell and his people they must deal with, rather it is O'Donovan Rossa and the "Dynamite gangs". He further writes asking for Gladstone's own views and intentions on the Irish question as he is hearing many differing things from both the newspapers and private letters he receives; he is "somewhat embarrassed" as to the "line I should take when I am forced to discuss the subject".
