Gladstone writes concerning his response to the statements made by SCC regarding self-government for Ireland. He writes that when saying the government "ought to settle the Irish question" he was under the impression that he was "expressing a general opinion" and that SCC's letter "is the first adverse notice I have had" on the matter.
