Scope and Content

Lord Northbrook writes after reading the correpondence between Lord Wolseley and Evelyn Baring. He writes as to his concern with the expedition to Khartoum, suggesting that it would be bigger than anticipated. He raises questions about the number of troops in Egypt, in the Soudan, at Suakin and Lord Wolseley's request for more troops, including Indian troops. He writes commenting on Osman Digna and questions what is to be gained by such an operation in Khartoum. He makes reference to C. Wilson, Kitchener, Rundle and Colville, stating that Wilson does not trust the Mahidi of Dongola. He raises further doubts whether the railway from Wadi Halfa can actually be completed. Finally, he gives his opinion how to deal with the matter both in Parliament and on the ground in Soudan. Sent from: Stratton. Letter is marked "private" in the top left corner.
