This material is held atThe Devonshire Collection Archives, Chatsworth

Scope and Content

SCC writes to Gladstone regarding his former private secretary Robert Hobart. He writes that he worked with him at the War Office and he applied to be Postmaster of Bristol but this was objected by John Tilley and [W Sandham]. However, SCC reports that he gave the position to Hobart and advised Tilley to propose it. SCC reports that Tilley has made stronger written objections and will not drop the matter. He writes that he wants Gladstone's advice. He reports that Lord Stanley appointed his private secretary to a position in the same manner. He writes that he does not want to disappoint a loyal private secretary and wants to arrange a meeting with Gladstone to discuss the matter further. He reports that George Grenfell Glynn advises that a political opponent should not be put in Bristol. Sent from: Post Office, London, date stamped, 22 June.
