SCC writes to his father that the meeting with the committee was satisfactory but the start was "alarming". He reports that the committtee believes the best way to stop the oppostion is to place a large sum of money into the bank for election purposes. They advise £5000 would be required to frighten his opponents but he informs his father that if there is no contest it will not be used. He writes that his tribulations will begin on Monday at Ulverston and then the serious ones will not be until Tuesday or Wednesday. Sent from: Preston, date stamped 13 March.
