Lord Derby writes thanking SCC for his letter which "falls in exactly with my ideas". He writes that he wished Gladstone's views had been left alone as it "greatly increases difficulties which were already serious" and would be taken "as a bid for the Irish vote". He finally writes confirming that SCC's letter published in the papers leaves him "clear of all responsibility". Sent from: Knowsley, Prescot.
