Wolseley writes to SCC regarding the proposed expedition to Khartoum to relieve General Charles Gordon. He reports that a "camel corps" will be required to be on the safe side and he is setting off for Wadi Halfa on Saturday as soon as provisions are secured and he will then request permission to move a battalion to Debbeh. He reports that the forces besieging Khartoum have retired for the harvest so he expects to bring his garrison and then arrange for a stable government to remain in the city. He writes that Colonel Alleyne has been assessing the cataracts of the Nile. He writes that the troops in Cairo and the hospital are in excellent condition. Sent from: Cairo, date stamped, 22 Sept.
