SCC writes to his father that he is departing Kimbolton. He writes that regarding rumours in London, he does not think anyone believes he has anything to do with the plot to depose William Ewart Gladstone as Leader of the Opposition. He informs his father that he told the plotters he would not ask and would not be involved and there did not seem to be much support for removing Gladstone. He writes that a party is planned for the Russells, Granvilles, Halifaxes, Edward Seymour, 12th Duke of Somerset, [Aubelbys], Charles Howard and Henry Brand but Gladstone will not go. SCC writes that they need to consult before Parliament meets again as they are "at the point of breaking up on the reform question." He asks his father to keep the matter private.
