SCC writes to his father that he has argued with Granville Leveson-Gower, 2nd Earl Granville regarding accepting the position of Chief Secretary of Ireland. He reports that Granville wants SCC to accept the position but SCC thinks he will dislike it and make a mess of it. He reports that William Ewart Gladstone has informed him he would only have to spend three months in Dublin but SCC still thinks that is too long.
