Scope and Content

Correspondence between Peter Hutton, journalist, and W.P. Crozier, relating to a request to be considered for employment at the Manchester Guardian, with details of previous experience, discussion of a meeting between Hutton and Crozier and a potential trial at the paper for Hutton, which does not take place. Also included is a further request by Hutton to be considered for any vacancy at the paper, with reference to his experience at the Yorkshire Post, and a proposed trip to Italy, accompanied by internal memoranda discussing the subject, with a recommendation for Hutton from James Bone, journalist.

There is a letter from Hutton to Bone discussing the situation in Italy, with reference to the present regime, press coverage and propaganda, and to the Vatican's policy on Spain and Germany, with discussion of communism and fascism, with the recommendations that the Manchester Guardian employ a Vatican correspondent, and suggesting that a meeting should be arranged with [Giuseppe] Pizzardo, cardinal, on his visit to England as part of the deputation sent to the coronation of King George VI.
