Scope and Content

Correspondence with Walter Runciman, first Viscount Runciman of Doxford (1870-1949), politician, relating to discussion of a complaint by Runciman about an article in the Manchester Guardian, ['Nationalising the Coalfields'], in which inaccurate statements are made about his resistance to the scheme. Also included is an apology from Scott, who acknowledges that the passage of the article in question should have been omitted, and discussion of Runciman's resignation as president of the Board of Trade. Also included is a letter from H. [Sache?] discussing Runciman's complaint and the Board of Trade.

There is correspondence relating to an expression by Runciman of thanks for and praise of [Harry] Boardman, journalist, and his reporting of the Swansea Liberal Autumn School for the Manchester Guardian, which is acknowledged. Also included is a request by E.T. Scott that Runciman write articles on free trade for publication in the Manchester Guardian, which is declined, owing to Runciman's workload.

GDN/A/R66/1 is an article entitled 'Nationalising the Coalfields' in the Manchester Guardian, 1916.
