Scope and Content

Correspondence between Frank L. Wright, journalist, and E.T. Scott, relating to an application by Wright for a vacancy of sub-editor for the Manchester Guardian Commercial, with details of previous experience, which is successful. There is discussion of the terms of employment, which are accepted, and accompanied by related internal memoranda. There are letters of recommendation for Wright from [David Hutchinson] Macgregor, political economist, Henry Clay, economist, and George William Daniels, political economist.

Also included is discussion of changes in Wright's work, following a move to the City office of the paper, and extra work carried out by Wright for the Manchester Guardian Commercial, instead of the Manchester Guardian Weekly. There are requests for and discussion of increases in salary for Wright, and of career progression. Also included are related internal correspondence and memoranda. There is correspondence relating to a request by Wright for permission to contribute a series of articles to the Daily Chronicle, which is declined. There is also reference to the loss of Wright's financial notes for the paper whilst in transit to Manchester, and discussion of whether a duplicate copy should be made to guard against future articles being mislaid.

There is internal correspondence between W.P. Crozier and Cecil [J.S.] Sprigge, journalist, relating to discussion of an application by Wright for a post at the News Chronicle, and of his value to the paper. Also included is discussion of Wright's resignation from employment at the paper, and notice period.
