Scope and Content

Correspondence with Leonard Trelawny Hobhouse (1864-1929), social philosopher and journalist, relating to Hobhouse's employment for a short period of time by the Manchester Guardian on an annual basis. Also included is correspondence relating to a proposal by Hobhouse to write leader articles for the Manchester Guardian on the provision of assistance to Armenia, with reference to the approach taken by Bulgaria, and the suggestion of a [memorial?] on the subject of Armenia, to be sent to [Edward] Grey, viscount and politician, or to the Turkish government. Also included is a letter to Hobhouse on securing support for Armenia from C.C. [Miricoff?], legation of Bulgaria. There is a request by Scott that Hobhouse write articles on the question of minimum wage from the point of view of economic theory, with reference to proposals for land reform, and arrangements for an interview for Hobhouse with [David] Lloyd George, politician, on the subject.

There is discussion of a change in the arrangements for Hobhouse's employment at the Manchester Guardian, with reference to payment for contributions, and to Hobhouse's role on the board of directors of the paper, and accompanied by a related internal memorandum on salary. Also included is a letter from George Unwin, historian, relating to discussion of and praise for Hobhouse's articles in the New Statesman and the Manchester Guardian.

There is correspondence relating to a memorial fund for Hobhouse, and a request that the Manchester Guardian may be used to advertise for subscriptions to the fund. There is a letter from Marjorie Hobhouse, daughter of Hobhouse, offering condolences on the death of Scott's sister, Catherine, and requesting the discontinuation of her subscription to the Manchester Guardian, as she intends to go abroad. There is a copy letter from Scott to [John Atkinson] Hobson, social theorist and economist, relating to the provision of an introduction by Scott for a memoir by Hobson entitled L.T. Hobhouse, his life and work, with discussion of Hobhouse and praise of the memoir.
