Scope and Content

Correspondence with Edward Harold Longson (1872-1941), judge, relating to the suggestion that Longson writer occasional leader articles for the Manchester Guardian, with discussion of the work involved, and arrangements for a meeting between Scott and Longson, accompanied by an internal memorandum relating to a trial period of employment for Longson at the paper. There is also an internal memorandum relating to amendments needed in the content of articles produced by Longson on golf for the Manchester Guardian. There is correspondence discussing the termination of Longson's employment as a writer on golf, due to the appointment of a sports sub-editor at the paper, with a request by Longson to continue to contribute occasional articles, which is accepted.

Also included is correspondence relating to a request for a recommendation from Scott for Longson for the position of Assistant Registrar at the [Chancery Court of Lancashire], accompanied by internal memoranda discussing the subject. There is also discussion of a complaint by Longson that a notice of Longson's appointment as a county court judge in the Manchester Guardian contained no reference to his work for the paper, the extension of apologies by E.T. Scott for the oversight, and of thanks by Longson for the apology and correction printed in the paper.
