Correspondence between Lionel T. Buckland and C.P. Scott, and E.T. Scott relating to the provision of weekly reports for the Manchester Guardian Commercial, and later of daily reports for the Manchester Guardian on the cotton market in Alexandria, Egypt.
The correspondence includes discussion of payment for the reports, which are sent via telegram, of their content, format and length and the potential for sending encoded reports, with accompanying related internal memoranda. Also included are references to the use of skeleton messages, with discussion of a complaint from Buckland regarding the misinterpretation of the sentence structure in an article on the sales of Egyptian cotton to Russia, which was sent via telegram in skeleton form.
There is also correspondence discussing the need to maintain the daily reports received during the busy season only, and instructions to Buckland to this effect. There is discussion of the termination of the arrangement for weekly reports from Buckland owing to the decision to employ another service. Buckland's multiple offers to resume this service are declined; however, the change in these arrangements does not affect Buckland's weekly reports to the Manchester Guardian Commercial.
There is a letter from Buckland relating to a request for employment as an expert on the cotton market by the Manchester Guardian, made on his return to England, which is declined. There is also a letter of recommendation for Buckland from Charles Ross, The British Egyptian Cotton Co. Ltd.
