Scope and Content

Correspondence with William J. Makin (1894(?)-1944), journalist and author, relating to a request to be considered for employment at the Manchester Guardian, with details of previous experience, which is declined. Also included is an internal memorandum discussing Makin's potential employment at the paper in the file room following being invalided home [during the First World War]. There is a letter of recommendation for Makin from T.J. Young, principal of the College of Agriculture, Cheshire.

There is a letter of resignation from Makin from his role as sub-editor at the Manchester Guardian, owing to the offer of a post on the Pioneer in India. Also included is a request to resume his employment following return from India, which is declined, but with praise of the articles contributed by Makin to the paper from India. There is a request by Scott that Makin provide advice and assistance to a friend of Scott's, Beatrice Eckhard, who is going to Capetown with the intention of teaching eurhythmics.

There is also a request for a reference for Maisky from A.W. King, journalist and London representative of the Sydney Morning Herald, which Crozier is unable to provide owing to the length of time since Maisky was employed at the Manchester Guardian.
