Correspondence with George W. Gough, writer, relating to discussion of Gough's employment to write book reviews for the Manchester Guardian, and also to a trial period of employment as a journalist at the paper, with reference to a trial period, discussion of the quality of Gough's work, and the eventual decision that he would not be offered permanent employment.

Also included is a letter of recommendation from Scott for Gough to [Charles?] Mallet, [politician, relating to the employment of Gough by the Free Trade Union], with congratulations on his appointment, and thanks for an offer by Gough to continue to write reviews for the Manchester Guardian.

There is correspondence relating to a request by Scott that Gough write a short regular paragraph for the Manchester Guardian on tariff reform and tariff matters, and advocating free trade, which is accepted, with thanks for review of booklet by Gough on Fiscal Fallacies which was published in the Manchester Guardian.

There is a letter of introduction for Gough from E.N. Bennett, politician and journalist, and a letter of recommendation for Gough from Henry William Carless Davis, historian.
