Scope and Content

Correspondence with Thomas Moffat Young, journalist and civil servant, relating to discussion of Young's employment for the Manchester Guardian, with reference to salary, work carried out for the paper, specialist articles on the [Manchester] ship canal, and book reviews. Also included are internal memoranda on payments made for work by Young in 1896-1897. There is discussion of Scott's inability to offer Young a permanent post at the paper.

Also included is correspondence between Young, Scott and Alexander Bell Filson Young, journalist and writer [brother of Young], relating to discussion of difficulties and misunderstandings which occurred during Filson Young's employment as a war correspondent for the Manchester Guardian in South Africa [during the second Boer War], accompanied by related internal memoranda. There is reference to Filson Young's recall from South Africa, to praise of his work by Scott, and an apology from Filson Young for his conduct. Also included is a request by Filson Young for a reference from Scott, and also a request that his brother, [Young], be given an opportunity to display his talents as a writer for the paper. There is discussion between Young and Scott of a book by Filson Young, [The Relief of Mafeking: How it Was Accomplished by Mahon's Flying Column; with an Account of Some Earlier Episodes in the Boer War of 1899-1900], and the need to ensure that the opinions it expresses are in line with the position on the war taken by the Manchester Guardian.

Also included is correspondence relating to the work of Young as commercial editor of the paper, an increase in salary, and reference to a visit by Young to America [as a correspondent for the Manchester Guardian on the American cotton industry]. There is a request by Young for a reference from Scott in support of an application for the position of deputy Public Trustee for Manchester, which is provided. Also included is discussion of a request by Young for the return of notes on a speech given by him at an [unknown] dinner, which are provided. There is also a letter of congratulation from W.P. Crozier on Young's receipt of the Companion of the Order of the Bath.
