There is correspondence relating to a request by Scott to see specimens of Gedye's work, to the provision by Gedye of a cuttings book, and to arrangements for its return, accompanied by related internal memoranda. Gedye's requests for permanent employment are refused, but an offer to consider occasional articles is given.

There are requests by Gedye to be considered for employment as a correspondent for the Manchester Guardian in Warsaw and Belgrade, and an offer to write articles from Germany, which are refused, and accompanied by related internal memoranda. Also included is discussion of Gedye's move to independent journalism, following his employment at The Times, and further offers to receive commissions for articles from the Manchester Guardian.

There are requests from Scott for articles by Gedye on the Rhineland [pact], and on the Landau court martial, with discussion of the articles, of the case, and of the negative views on the French encountered by Gedye on a visit to Bavaria.

Also included is correspondence relating to articles by Gedye offered to the Manchester Guardian on Anglo-Franco-German relations in the Rhineland, on the changes in Cologne since the departure of the British, and on Anglo-Russian relations, with reference to Soviet propaganda, which are accepted. There is also an offer of an article entitled 'The Mantle of Metternich', on trade and relations between Britain and China, and on [Benito] Mussolini, prime minister of Italy, and the political affairs in Italy, which is declined and accompanied by internal memoranda discussing the subject. [A copy of the article is included.]

There is correspondence relating to Gedye's expression of regret at Scott's retirement, and a further request for employment, accompanied by internal memoranda discussing the subject.

Also included is correspondence between Gedye and E.T. Scott, relating to a request for an opinion on a book by Gedye, entitled Heirs to the Habsburgs prior to its publication, which is refused, and request for a notice of the book to appear in the Manchester Guardian, which is accepted.
