Scope and Content

Correspondence with Samuel Kirkham Ratcliffe (1868-1958), journalist and lecturer, relating to the provision of occasional articles by Ratcliffe on India for publication in the Manchester Guardian, with requests for and discussion of potential subjects, accompanied by related internal memoranda. There is a request by Ratcliffe to be considered for permanent employment at the paper, with details of his previous experience, and discussion of terms of employment, and arrangements to accommodate a series of lectures to be given by Ratcliffe in London, and a lecture tour of America.

Also included is a request that Ratcliffe does not associate himself with the Manchester Guardian in the publicity material for his lecture tours, which is acknowledged, with apology and explanation. There is discussion of Ratcliffe providing information to the paper on America via cable, of the political situation in America, of American journalism, and of the American impressions of Britain. Also included is a further offer of employment for Ratcliffe by the Manchester Guardian, which is declined, owing to offers of work made in America, and an offer by Ratcliffe to carry out additional work for the paper on his return to England.

There a request by Scott for advice from Ratcliffe on the appointment of a new correspondent for the paper in America, with discussion of the role and its previous incumbents, Ratcliffe's recommendation of Bruce Bliven, journalist and author, and Bliven's subsequent appointment. Also included is correspondence relating to further complaints regarding the use of the Manchester Guardian in Ratcliffe's publicity material for lectures, with particular reference to a fictional description in a circular for the war danger conference, accompanied by a copy of Ratcliffe's letter of complaint to the war danger conference, and his withdrawal as a speaker at the event. There is discussion of articles by Ratcliffe on American opinion on naval affairs, and on the American [presidential] election for the Manchester Guardian.

There is correspondence between Ratcliffe and E.T. Scott, relating to articles by Ratcliffe on the elections in America, and discussion of the potential review by Ratcliffe of a book on [Warren G.] Harding, president, with discussion of the scandals uncovered following his presidency. Also included is a complaint by Ratcliffe over grammatical and spelling errors discovered in the Manchester Guardian, and a sympathetic acknowledgement from E.T. Scott in response. There is an offer of articles by Ratcliffe for the back pages of the paper from a forthcoming lecture tour in America, which are accepted, and an internal memorandum containing Ratcliffe's entry in Who Was Who.

There is correspondence with Katie Ratcliffe, wife of Ratcliffe, relating to a request for a copy of a photograph of C.P. Scott and Mohandas Karamchand [Mahatma] Gandhi, political leader and religious and social reformer, which was published in Manchester Guardian, and discussion of a visit made by Katie Ratcliffe to Russia.
