Correspondence with Henry Spenser Wilkinson (1853-1937), military historian, relating to discussion of a trial period of employment for Wilkinson at the Manchester Guardian, with as much occasional work as possible, and an offer of full time employment at the paper [as a military critic and leader writer], with discussion of salary. Also included is a related internal memorandum. There is discussion of a dispute between [W.T. Arnold, journalist and author?] and Wilkinson relating to the editing of articles by Wilkinson.
There is correspondence relating to the renewal of Wilkinson's employment, with an expression of reservations about its continuation by Scott, and an outline of the new terms of employment offered. There is a request by Wilkinson for an increase in salary, which is declined, owing to Scott's concerns that Wilkinson does not share the Liberal values of the paper. Also included is discussion of the arrangements and terms of the termination of Wilkinson's employment, with a request for financial assistance, which is granted. There is reference to Wilkinson's decision to leave before the end of his notice period owing to the offer of a trip to India, and an expression of thanks for a leaving gift, and a letter of farewell from Scott.
There is reference to the acceptance by Scott of a request by Wilkinson that his son be considered as a reviewer of books for the Manchester Guardian. Also included is discussion of Wilkinson's work as a reviewer of books on military history for the paper, with reference to difficulties with his eye sight.
GDN/A/W46/21 is a notice of Wilkinson's death in the World's Press News, 1937.
