Correspondence with Sir (Frederick) Maurice Powicke (1879-1963), historian, relating to a request that Powicke write notices on the Manchester University Magazine for the Manchester Guardian, which is accepted, with discussion of length. There is a letter of recommendation for Powicke for the notices from [Samuel] Alexander, philosopher. Also included is an invitation from Powicke to Scott for a dinner and informal conference at which [Elie] Halevy, philosopher, is speaking, which is declined.

There is a request made by Powicke's father, Frederick Powicke, congregational minister and historian, to Thomas Frederick Tout, historian, for a recommendation as a reviewer of books for the Manchester Guardian, which is provided. There is discussion of a suggestion by Powell that notices of Record Office publications are given in the Manchester Guardian, which is declined, but with the suggestion that Powicke produce a brief description of each volume for publication in the paper, which is accepted. Also included are internal memoranda discussing the subject.

There is correspondence between Powicke and E.T. Scott, relating to a complaint by Powicke regarding a review of Warren Hastings and Philip Francis by Sophia Weitzman, historian, published in the Manchester Guardian. There is also a request for a letter to the editor by Powicke on the subject to be published in the paper, which is declined, but with apologies for any distress the review has caused. Also included is a request by E.T. Scott for an article by Powicke on privileges historically conferred by the conferral of freedom of the city, to coincide with C.P. Scott's receipt of the honour in Manchester.
