Scope and Content

Correspondence with Harold Whitmore Williams (1876-1928), journalist and linguist, relating to Williams' employment as a correspondent for the Manchester Guardian in Russia, with details of previous experience, and discussion of salary, and the sources of information available to Williams. Also included is discussion of the political situation in Russia, and the approach of the Russian revolution. There is a suggestion of an arrangement to share information from correspondents in Russia between the Manchester Guardian and L'Hummanite, and a request for permission and discussion of proposals for contributions by Williams to American newspapers.

There is discussion of advice and assistance provided by Williams in the securing of occasional correspondents for the paper in cities in Russia, Poland and the Ukraine, with reference to the terms of employment to be offered. Also included is the provision of a letter to the editor by [6 members of the constitutional party in Finland] in response to an article on relations between Finland and Russia published in the paper entitled 'An Unfamiliar View of Finnish Politics'.

There is a request for advice by Williams for the procedure for temporarily covering for the work of the correspondent for the Daily Telegraph, and for guidance on the coverage required of elections in Russia. There is reference to the contribution of articles by Williams to the Daily Chronicle, and the Liverpool Courier, and to Williams' resignation from work for the Manchester Guardian in order to take up the post of correspondent for the Morning Post, with recommendations as to his replacement. Also included is discussion of payment for Williams' later work as an occasional correspondent for the paper on Russia, with discussion of the requirements for articles.
