Correspondence between T[homas] S[outhcliffe] Ashton (1889-1968), economic historian, and E.T. Scott relating to discussion of free trade, of the effect of imported goods on British manufacturing and employment, and their impact on British and foreign securities.

Also included is correspondence on an article by Ashton on the effect of gold supplies on employment for the Manchester Guardian, and a request from E.T. Scott for information on the issues with Sterling securities and the exchange rate.

There is a request for Ashton's opinion of a statement on the balance of trade intended for potential publication in the Manchester Guardian, and arrangements for meetings between E.T. Scott and Ashton.
