Scope and Content

Correspondence with Henry [Ernest] Metcalf, relating to an offer by Metcalf of a letter to the editor on British trade with Russia, with reference to the impact of current trade relations with Russia on British trade with the continent [which is accepted], and accompanied by related internal memoranda. Also included is a memorandum by Metcalf outlining current perspectives on trade with Russia in Britain. There is a covering letter for Metcalf's articles from Robert Donald, journalist. There is a request for a further article by Metcalf on trade with Russia for publication in the Manchester Guardian, which is declined, owing to a lack of any new information.

There is a letter of thanks for copies of the Japan Advertiser, sent by Metcalf, and reference to the current political developments in Japan. There is discussion of a letter to the editor by Metcalf on the renewal of commercial relations with Russia, discussion of an article on engineering by Metcalf for potential publication in the paper. There is also an offer of letters from Metcalf from a visit to Moscow as part of the delegation of the Anglo-Russia Committee, which are accepted. There is a suggestion by Metcalf that Manchester Guardian employ his son, Maurice R. Metcalf, to visit the agricultural districts of Russia to write articles for the paper, which is declined, though with an expression of interest in a small number of articles on the subject in general.
