Correspondence between Sir Herbert Geraint Williams, (1884-1954), politician, and E.T. Scott, relating to arrangements for meetings between Williams and E.T. Scott, and discussion of trade, with reference to protectionism and tariffs. Also included is an internal memorandum discussing the subject. There is discussion of a letter to the editor by Williams on [trade tariffs], and confirmation that it was not published owing to the tentative nature of the opinions expressed.
There is discussion of an inability by E.T. Scott to advocate Williams as a parliamentary candidate [in the general election, 1931] in the Manchester Guardian, but with an offer to include a general discussion of points made in Williams' election address in the columns of the paper. Also included is correspondence relating to Williams' candidature for the Combined English Universities constituency, with the provision of a statement on speeches undertaken around the country by Williams on behalf of other candidates, which is published in the paper. There is an expression of praise by Williams for the coverage of the University constituency candidates in the Manchester Guardian, which is acknowledged, but with confirmation that Williams is E.T. Scott's second preference to win the seat. Also included are further arrangements for meetings between E.T. Scott and Williams, and a response to an enquiry by Williams as to the health of C.P. Scott, confirming that he is unlikely to recover.
