Scope and Content

Correspondence with Herbert B Elliston (1895-1957), journalist, relating to discussion of Elliston's employment as a correspondent in Peking for the Manchester Guardian, with complaints by Elliston relating to payment for messages, and payment of a retainer, and internal memoranda discussing the subject. Also included are internal memoranda relating to Elliston's salary and rate of payment for messages, 1924-1927, and the suggestion that further increases in payment will not be offered. There is discussion of assistance and information provided in Elliston's absence by W.H. Donald, journalist, and a previous Peking correspondent for the Manchester Guardian.

There is correspondence relating to Elliston's resignation in order to take up the post of assistant director of research at the Council for Foreign Relations, and discussion of the work of the council, and its publications. There is reference to an offer from Elliston to provide information for the Manchester Guardian from New York, which is declined. Also included is correspondence relating to discussion of the 'Survey of American Foreign Relations', published by the Council for Foreign Relations, a copy of which is sent to the Manchester Guardian by Elliston.
