Scope and Content

Correspondence with Robert Thomson Clark, journalist and editor, relating to discussion of occasional articles by Clark for publication in the Manchester Guardian on Munich prior to [the First World War], the influence of war in literature, on Abyssinia, Austria and of employment of Clark as a reviewer. There is discussion of Clark's previous experience, employment at the Glasgow Herald, and The Daily Telegraph, and arrangements for a meeting between Clark and Scott. There is a letter of recommendation scientist and journalist.

There is correspondence relating to Clark's employment as a leader writer for the Manchester Guardian, with discussion of the role, responsibilities, salary and increases in salary. Also included is discussion of payment for Clark's work as a translator for the Manchester Guardian Commercial on a supplement about Romania. There is also correspondence relating to an alteration in offer of employment for Clark, due to the need for the Manchester Guardian to economise. Clark is offered a position as a sub-editor, which leads to the tendering of his resignation. There is a letter of reference for Clark by W.P. Crozier, and a letter from Scott on his regret at Clark's resignation.

There is correspondence relating to discussion of Clark's employment as foreign editor at the BBC, with a request for the return of a book sent to Clark for potential review, entitled Skyscrapers and other essays, by [Lewis Bernstein] Namier, with discussion of Clark's opinion of the publication. Also included is discussion of a series of talks on foreign affairs for the BBC to which F[rederick] A[ugustus] Voigt, journalist and author [for the Manchester Guardian, is contributing. There is a letter of congratulation to Clark from Crozier [on his appointment as chief news editor at the BBC].
