Correspondence with Edward G. Hawke, journalist, relating to Hawke's employment at the Manchester Guardian, with a list of contributions made, discussion of hours, increases in salary, and the quality of Hawke's work, accompanied by related internal memoranda. Also included is discussion of an inability to offer Hawke a permanent position on the staff of the paper, but with encouragement that he remain a contributor.

There is correspondence relating to discussion of Hawke's resignation from employment, and also to his appointment as an assistant editor at the Daily Chronicle, with a request by Hawke to continue to write reviews for the Manchester Guardian, which is accepted.
