Scope and Content

Correspondence with Robert Victor Walling (1895-1976), journalist and secretary of the Institute of Journalists, relating to discussion of the establishment of the Manchester Guardian and Evening News Society, and confirmation that it will have no impact on members of the Institute of Journalists, support for Oak Hill, a rest and recovery centre for journalists, a correction of the roles of C.P. Scott and E.T. Scott as described in the Institute of Journalists' Grey Book, discussion of policy on the period of notice given to employees, and also of a proposed scheme for apprenticeships in journalism, with a request for comments on the scheme, and whether it might be adopted by the paper, which is declined.

Also included is correspondence with Philip Eason Verstone, journalist and assistant editor of the Institute Journal, relating to a meeting at the Institute [of Journalists] on the on the effect of the amalgamation of newspapers on journalists, and discussion of the subject. There is correspondence with [Ralph] Blumenfeld, journalist, editor and president of the Institute of Journalists, relating to a resolution passed by Institute relating to the minimum amount of holiday allowance for employees, and confirmation that this is provided by the Manchester Guardian. There is also correspondence with Rowland Cragg, journalist, relating to a request for a letter of greeting from Scott for visit to Manchester by a conference of Institute of Journalists, which is provided.
