Scope and Content

Correspondence with James Gerald Crowther (1899-1983), science journalist and administrator, relating to Crowther's employment as science correspondent for the Manchester Guardian, with discussion of terms, salary, payment for articles and interviews conducted by Crowther with renowned scientists, accompanied by related internal memoranda. There is discussion of articles by Crowther articles on the great meteorite, and relating to science in Russia, and on the potential employment of Crowther as a reviewer of scientific books for the Manchester Guardian.

There is correspondence relating to requests by Crowther for permission to publish articles written for the Manchester Guardian in books and collections of articles, which are accepted. Also included are letters of thanks from Scott for the provision of copies of Crowther's books, with discussion of their form, and of a proposed review of the book Science for You in the Manchester Guardian. There is discussion of salary and a request for an increase in retaining fee by Crowther, which is refused, accompanied by related internal memoranda.

Also included is correspondence relating to a proposal by Crowther that he be employed as a correspondent for the Manchester Guardian on science in Russia, which is rejected. There is correspondence relating to discussion of an invitation for Crowther to address a philosophical society by G.A. Birkett, lecturer in Russian at the University of Sheffield, a request to republish an article by Crowther entitled 'Soviet Hospitals' from an unknown publication, and a request by Messrs Kahn and Kahn to translate articles by Crowther on research in Germany for publication in French newspapers, which are accepted.

There are copies of letters of credential for Crowther as a scientific correspondent for the Manchester Guardian by W.P. Crozier. Also included is correspondence relating to the discontinuation of Crowther's retainer, owing to the financial constraints imposed by [the Second World] War, although Crowther is invited to continue contributing occasional articles.
