Correspondence with Sir John Hobbis Harris (1874-1940), campaigner against slavery, relating to the provision by Harris of a pamphlet by Lord Cromer [Evelyn Baring], diplomatist and proconsul, with reference to the arrest of S. Bowskill, clergyman [following the uprising] in Portuguese West Africa. There is also correspondence relating to an offer by Harris of articles from a trip to South Africa for publication in the Manchester Guardian, with discussion of potential subjects, including the occupation of German colonies, the effect of the [First World] war in South Africa, and the attitude of the natives, and potential articles relating to the war are accepted by Scott.
There is discussion of the need for immunity for Central Africa in the event of European hostilities, and of an article on the subject by Harris entitled 'A Peace Zone in Africa' in The Contemporary Review. Also included is discussion of a review by Harris of [The Confessions of a Tenderfoot Coaster by Frederick Warren] Henry published in the Manchester Guardian, and of the payment of costs owing to a protest by Henry over the review, accompanied by a related internal memorandum. There is correspondence relating to the offer of an article by Harris on a report of native affairs in Kenya, which is declined, though a request is made to see the report.
