Scope and Content

Correspondence with John Grierson (1898-1972), documentary film-maker, relating to a request by Grierson to be considered for employment at the Manchester Guardian, which is refused, with a request for specimens of work, and accompanied by related internal memoranda. Also included is correspondence discussing Grierson's [Rockefeller scholarship to study immigration and its effects upon the social problems of the United States at the University of Chicago], with reference to a meeting with Scott, and advice received on journalism.

There is correspondence relating to amendments required in an article by Grierson for the back page of the Manchester Guardian, and discussion of the potential employment of Grierson at the Manchester Guardian, which does not take place owing to Grierson's continuing work in America, with related internal memoranda. There is discussion of a survey of newspaper offices in America to be undertaken by Grierson, and a request from Scott for a potential article on the subject. Also included is an offer by Grierson for a series of articles on cinema, with discussion of potential content, which are declined.

There are letter of recommendation for Grierson from J.T. Grieg, registrar at the University of Glasgow, and Lord [Herbert John?] Gladstone, politician.
