Scope and Content

Correspondence with Harold John Timperley (1898-1954), journalist, relating to the provision by Timperley of article from The China Critic which praises the Manchester Guardian, with a request for information on the history of the paper, which is provided. There is discussion of an article in the Manchester Guardian on Britain's recognition of the nationalist government in China, with discussion of the political situation in China, accompanied by an internal memorandum and a letter from Arthur Ransome, journalist and writer, discussing Timperley's views.

There is also correspondence between Timperley and W.P. Crozier, relating to discussion of the terms of employment for Timperley as correspondent for the Manchester Guardian in China, with reference to the payment of a retainer. Also included are related internal memoranda, including a list of persons asked by Timperley to send material to the paper.
