Gosling was educated at Hyde County Grammar School and the University of Manchester. He held house positions at Withington Hospital Manchester before being appointed demonstrator in anatomy at the University of Manchester. In 1965 he was promoted to assistant lecturer and was awarded MD in 1967. The same year he went to the University of California as acting assistant professor of pharmacology. He returned to Manchester in 1968 and in 1970 was appointed senior lecturer. Gosling was appointed professor of anatomy at the University of Manchester in 1977.
