Grant was educated at the University of Melbourne, where he qualified in dentistry in 1952. He was a lecturer in dental prosthetics at the University of Melbourne, and was appointed professor of restorative dentistry at the University of Manchester in 1970. He remained in this post until he retired. Grant was dean of the Turner Dental School from 1977-1981 and director of the University Dental Hospital of Manchester from 1988-1992. He was a pro vice-chancellor of the University of Manchester from 1983-6. Grant was also a former chairman of the Dental Education Advisory Council. He was president of the odolontological section of MMC in 1977-8.
