MBBS Calcutta 1959, DGO 1961; MRCOG 1964, FRCOG 1983.

Bhattacharyya was born in Calcutta on 22 January 1935. After gaining qualifications in Calcutta, he moved to England where he held obstetrical positions at Wisbech Hospital, Huddersfield Hospital and Stepping Hill Hospital. In 1971 Bhattacharyya was appointed registrar in venereology at Sheffield Royal Infirmary, promoted to consultant in 1973 when he also became honorary clinical lecturer in venereal diseases. In October 1979 he moved to Manchester where he was appointed consultant in genito-urinary medicine at MRI and honorary associate lecturer in genito-urinary medicine at the University of Manchester. He was a member of Manchester Medical Society , North of England Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society and the Medical Society for the Study of Venereal Diseases.
