Gattie held junior appointments at MRI and Bury Municipal Hospital before being appointed medical officer of health for Bucklow Rural District. He was later appointed clinical assistant to Ancoats Hospital Manchester and to the Margaret Barclay Crippled Children's Home. He was a fellow of Manchester Medical Society and later retired to Cornwall.
