Freeman was born in Manchester on 1 November 1937 and studied at Manchester Grammar School and the University of Manchester. After qualifying, Freeman held junior positions at Colindale Hospital London, Hope Hospital Salford, Victoria Hospital Blackpool and Salford Royal Infirmary. In 1966 he was appointed medical registrar at Hammersmith Hospital and then senior registrar in geriatrics at St Francis Hospital London. However, Freeman later returned to Manchester as a general practitioner and was consultant in geriatrics at South the University of Manchester Hospitals. Freeman was a member of the British Tuberculosis Association and later of the British Geriatric Society.
