Beastall was born in Crewe on 12 July 1948. After qualifying at Manchester he held various house positions at MRI, University Hospital of South Manchester and Booth Hall Children's Hospital. He was in general practice in Marple from 1976 to 1977, before being appointed medical officer for the Occupational Health Department of North West Gas, Altrincham. Beastall was a member of the General Medical Council, the Society of Occupational Medicine and Manchester Medical Society .
